“THE
UGLY DUCKLING”
The
Ugly Duckling is a story that was written by Hans Christian Andersen. It was
published in Copenhagen, Denmark 11 November 1843.
One beautiful summer on a rural, there was a duck mother that was waiting for
her eggs to hatch. Then, one by one egg hatched, but there was one egg left.
Patiently, the duck mother brooded that egg until it hatched. But, The duckling
that hatched was so ugly. “I don’t know why my son can be so ugly” The duck
mother said to herself. This gray duckling was so ugly, and he was also bigger
than his brother and his sister with long neck and yellow beak. He always be
mocked. Day by day passed, the ugly duckling more and more felt unhappy. His
brother and his sister wouldn’t play with him, he was so awkward and all
animals in this rural was laughing at him. He felt so sad and alone.
One
day, he decided to leave the rural. Then he stopped in the bank of the pond and
asked to the duck there, “Do you know other duck that have gray feather like
me?”. All of them shook their head sneeringly. So, he went to the other pond
and asked to the other duck, but they gave same answer. He kept move until old
lady caught him and thought that he is female duck. That lady put him on a cote
and hoped she would get eggs. The han and the cat always frightened him. So, at
one night he run away from the lady’s house, and on the morning, he saw a group
of beautiful birds that fly over him. White, long neck, yellow beak, and wide
wings. The duckling was so wonder and want to be one of them. Then he left and
looked for meals in the middle of snow, and suddenly he fainted. A farmer found
and brought him to his house and took care the duckling.
At
winter, he grew so big. So, the farmer loose him in a pond. Then, he saw his
shadow on the water and realized that he was changed. A group of swan came to
the pond, when he saw them he realized that he is one of them. The group of
swan came to him and invited him to be the part of them. Suddenly, there is a
child shouted “Look at that young swan, he is the most beautiful swan”, and he
was really happy.
- The conflicts that exist in this movie are the ugly duckling that was mocked by the others, it shows that there is a conflict between the character and the other animal. Then, when the rural didn’t accept him as the part of them, it shows there is a conflict between the character and society.
- Theme of this story is patience. The ugly duckling always accepts anything that the others did to him. He also keep be patient until he changes become a beautiful swan.
- Moral values that we could find from this movie are : Don’t mock anything that was created, because it could be greater than us. Don’t give up easily.
